Senior Design Team sdmay20-55 • Wireless Backyard Chicken Food and Water Monitor
Raising chickens and other poultry for eggs in backyards is an increasingly popular hobby. Ensuring the chickens are
healthy requires monitoring their water and food supply. The goal of this project is to design and build a wireless
water/feed sensor to report when water cans and feeders are empty.
Automatic coop door openers are available for purchase from several online retailers. Poultry owners can also find
instructions for building automatic feeders. Yet, there don't seem to be any products on the market for remote
monitoring of water and feed levels. This is your chance to engineer a unique solution.
The solution should consist of sensors for monitoring water and feed levels, a WiFi transmitter, and a website (or
other appropriate interface) for users to remotely access water and feed levels. The sensor(s) and transmitter must
function outdoors, on battery power, with minimal protection from the elements. As a stretch goal, sensors could
detect frozen (or near freezing) water as well.
